If your bank account could talk, what would it say about you?
Would it tell me you love seeing client payments roll in and are equally enthusiastic about investing in a new website or hiring a great coach?
Would it tell me you’re the first to pick up the check when you go out with friends, but rarely spend that generously on yourself?
Would it tell me you happily splurge on designer shoes, luxury hotels, and first-class flights because you love the finer things in life?
Would it tell me you love the convenience of having groceries delivered and consider the delivery fee money well spent?
Your bank account doesn’t care whether you’re extravagant, practical, generous, ambitious, or a combination of all four.
It simply records what you do with your money.
And that makes your bank account one of the most revealing places to look at your money story.
The Money Story Is In the Details
Take a peek at what those transactions have in common: You’re putting money toward something you value. Whether it’s convenience, generosity, luxury, or growing your business, there’s a belief about money behind each choice.
For example, valuing your time shows up in the services you pay for so you can spend your hours doing something else. Your ambition shows up in the money you’re willing to invest in your ideas, your expertise, and the future you’re creating.
Your bank account captures all of it without deciding whether your choices are sensible, indulgent, extravagant, or worth every penny.
But what about the money you’re spending on things you don’t even want anymore?
The membership you keep paying for because you loved the idea of joining, even though you haven’t used it in months. The service you signed up for when your business was headed in a different direction. The expense that continues because you care about the person providing it.
The point is, you can end up paying for something long after you’ve stopped choosing it.
Of course, plenty of your expenses are for things you genuinely want. You love your business coach. You appreciate the person who takes care of your website. You enjoy the convenience of paying someone else to handle things you don’t have time for.
But loving what you’re spending money on doesn’t automatically mean you love what all that spending adds up to.
Your bank account records every one of those transactions without distinguishing between the choices you’re excited about and the ones you’ve stopped questioning.
Your Money Story Is Written In Real Money
Your bank account doesn’t judge your money choices. And it doesn’t congratulate you for a purchase you loved or criticize you for one you regret.
Your account is an unbiased, unfiltered mirror of where you’re directing your money toward what you value and where guilt, obligation, or someone else’s expectations have been influencing your choices.
The distinction matters because there’s a world of difference between choosing to spend your money and allowing an old story or someone else’s expectations to keep making that choice for you.
Your money story belongs to you. So the next time you look at your bank account, look beyond where your money went. Look at how much of it went toward what you truly value and how much went toward expectations and obligations you’re ready to leave behind.
You get to love what you spend your money on AND love what you have to show for the money you’ve made.
That’s what it means to have authority with money: Your beliefs, your choices, and your money working together on purpose.
You know how you can be confident in the value of your work and still find yourself second-guessing what to charge?
Your money story doesn’t just influence how much you pay yourself. It also influences your pricing, and that has the most significant impact on how much money your business makes.
